Game Engine, Alpha Launch, and More!

Today we bring you some compelling logistical details from the inner workings of the Neopets Metaverse. We hope that by the end of this article we will have answered some of your questions about the build and timeline of the Neopets Metaverse, so let’s get right to it!
The Game Engine
We are happy to announce that the Neopets Metaverse is being built using the Unity engine. For those less technologically adept, Unity is a game engine with cross-platform support for various formats: web, desktop, browser, mobile, console, and VR. The versatility of cross-platform support as well as the quality of 3D rendering were important aspects our development team considered in choosing to construct the Neopets Metaverse using Unity.
Alpha Launch and Our Updated Timeline
On the less technical side, we have some key updates regarding the timing of our Alpha Launch. Here is our most updated timeline for the release of the Neopets Metaverse:
August 2022
- Private testnet Alpha launch (For Genesis Neopians and those of the community on the whitelist).
- The platform will be desktop browser-based.
September 2022
- Public Alpha launch.
- The platform will be desktop browser-based.
Q4 2022
- Release of desktop app versions of the Neopets Metaverse.
Q1 2023
- Private and public Beta launch.
- Mobile versions will be released concurrently with our Beta release.
Q2 2023 and beyond
Major updates on a quarterly basis included but not limited to:
- Introduction of new features (such as the Land system).
- Introduction of new Neopets species and items.
- Introduction of Lands and plots.
- Introduction of mini-games and other gameplay elements.
As you can see, our private testnet alpha launch is right on the horizon. September of this year will see our public alpha launch as well — both public and private alpha launches will be desktop browser-based. 2023 will usher in not only desktop app versions of the Neopets Metaverse but also our beta launch, complete with mobile versions of the game.
